Army Basic Training 4 – Ft. Jackson – 2001

Word is out, we’re probably going to basic soon. They say it’s about 30 miles away, middle of nowhere. The guys are getting restless. So far, we haven’t done much physical exercise except the PT maybe. Did some pushups her and there till we dropped cuz somebody’s doing something stupid. Met a colonel and a major today, they had dinner and inspected the barracks. Didn’t talk to them but the metal on their hats shines brightly and I’m suddenly jealous and respectful at the same time. Later, after waiting for so long once again, we had shots on our arms. I was nervous with the first needle on my arm, but the next 3 weren’t bad at all. It goes in, it goes out in a split second. The last one had a little air pressure to it, lots of people were saying that one hurt like a bitch, but I was too sleepy to notice. But my arms started hurting, then went numb. Could barely life them, then dinner came. Someone was talking out loudly, the sgt made us do arm raises, the raising the roof motion. After the shots, this was hell. It went on for almost 10 minutes and stopped. I can feel them now, but the arms really hurt. Starting to do pushups whenever I find the time and opportunity to, otherwise I’m keeping quiet and minding my own business, writing letters, shining boots, getting myself cleaned up. Pushups on concrete feel a lot different than on carpet for sure. I max out at 40 tops, need to work on that some more. It gets really cold at night, can’t do anything about it, though, just stay warm in the first place. Tonight, we got the word, shopping out tomorrow. It was originally tonight, but the plan changed from here to forward deployment (which is just like another reception center but located at the actual basic training, meaning more waiting for us) to direct check-in to basic, our training begins Friday.
