Army Basic Training 30 – Ft. Jackson – 2001

Man, today we had it so easy, it felt like another Sunday. It’s really supposed to be a POST detail clean-up day, where everyone’s all busy doing busy work, but instead, it ended up being really relaxing. In the morning we got separated. Me, I got stuck chipping the paint off the laundry room. I got unlucky, sure, and others had other jobs like picking up rocks and trimming bushes, painting walls, sweeping and mopping. Then after lunch, I along with 6 others got picked to go somewhere in a van. We found out 30 minutes later that we were cleaning up a pet cemetery and a human cemetery with dead people dating back to 1870s and 1930s. Back to barracks. Found out everyone was sleeping. Man, that 3 hour nap felt crazy good. The females were unlucky cuz the drill sergeants were making sure everything was squared away on their side. The night before, me, Carson and McKissick were stuck with extra duty, so we wore PTs, LCEs, black socks/boots and kevlar helmet. They had bazookas to hold, and I had a rifle at parade rest in front of the door. I felt so humiliated, I felt like a freaken GI Joe toy some kid was having fun with. Then later I had CQ. SO 5 hours of extra duty gave me only 4 hours of sleep.
