IBM Finance
Financial planning, pricing, treasury, financing.
“IBM usually only hires MBAs for this kind of internship”
“It wasn’t an easy decision because there was a lot of competition. Frankly, a lot of people applied for this job from Berkeley and you’re the only one we’re taking.”
Either Westchester or Dutchess County, NY. From what I know, it’s about 30 minute drive from New York City, in the city of White Plains.
I’ll find out more about the compensation and the exact location later on. But as long as it pays the bills, it’s something I wanted to do for many reasons:
1. The name. IBM. The company’s not going away anytime soon, and if I end up making it a career, I feel like it could get me farther than I originally dreamed of. Even if I don’t like Finance necessarily, I feel like the company’s big enough (~320,000 employees) for me to pursue other things.
2. The experience. Even if I don’t get or decline a full time job offer, this is gonna be a huge resume builder.
3. New York: Everyone talks about it for some reason. I haven’t been back after my visit some 5 years ago.
4. Something new. I suppose Deloitte Consulting or KPMG Accounting could have been a great job, too, but I needed to do something that one else that I knew was doing or have done. I really wanted to do something on my own and stop living in the shadows of people I’ve known all my life.
Other full time worker benefits:
-Health and Dental
-15 paid vacation days a year, +12 paid holidays a year
-Cash compensation opportunities include base pay, performance bonus, commissions, awards
-5% stock purchase discount, up to $25,000 worth of stock a year.
-401(k) plan. IBM offers a dollar-for-dollar match, up to the first 6 percent of pay you contribute to the plan.
– Employee Purchase Program: This program offers employees selected IBM personal computer hardware and software products at significantly less than suggested retail prices.
You know what’s great? Playing baseball. We just went to go bat and play catch a little bit at the park, and for a couple hours, I remembered all too vividly why I love the game, even if I suck at it. I’m so sore right now, but it was worth it. Good luck to Berkeley High Baseball team with their entrance into a new league this year.
Sometimes, the only thing you can trust in your life is yourself and your music. It never pretends to be something else, never turns your back on you, and is always what you need it to be.
