Obama after mentioning Christina Taylor Green, the 9 year old who was killed in the Arizona shooting: “All of us – we should do everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children’s expectations.”
I know Obama was speaking about how this country needs to take this incident to motivate ourselves to make a better future for ourselves and our children. But I think this statement is also indicative of what motivated Jared Lee Loughner to go postal in the first place. I believe that Jared Lee Loughner’s cynicism was derived from his inability to face the disappointment in his own life and was unable to constructively use that fact to motivate himself to become who he wants to be. Instead, he destructively used that to shift the blame to the prominent political figures. To me, this is the simplest of all psychoanalysis, similar to why I believe many conduct domestic violence, too.
True forgiveness, I believe, is the answer. Forgive our parents for making the stupid remarks that have scarred us. Forgive others who disagree from our perspectives. And perhaps most importantly, we need to learn to forgive ourselves for falling short of our own expectations.
