UC Berkeley 32 – Berkeley, California – 2002

Busy day. Had to go to the Army base because I didn’t want to lose my way on the 14th, the Saturday for the real drill. Well, I got lost along the way a bit, but I got used to the main roads that I could use as guides. I went through lots of ghettos and black neighborhoods, and finally found out that the Army base is across the way from these railroads… found out that those train companies spend lots of money on fences… So I had to take the West Grand Avenue overpass, and well, I suppose that’s alright, although it’s just harder. Met SFC Freeman-Cohen, made sure he knew who I am and all for tomorrow, and had a nice talk and stuff, along with Chief Warrant Officer 4 Love, who made a really good impression on me. I like the people in the unit so far, and I know I’ve yet to see the best of it yet.
According to Mapquest:
Apartment to Army Base 5.71miles 22 minutes
Army Base to West Oakland Bart 2.11miles 8 minutes
West Oakland Bart to Port of Oakland +- 3 miles
Port of Oakland to West Oakland Bart +- 3 miles
West Oakland Bart to Apartment 5.47miles 21 minutes
So in total, I rode 19.29 miles with 1 mile as margine of error. I saw things I never thought I would, and although the Port of Oakland had fences and security so I can’t get too close to the ships and stuff, I did see some amazing things. Found out that the Berkeley Marina has a better view, though, since this one has all this stuff on the way, blocking the view of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate. But yeah, I went to the Bart station, but when I got there, I was thinking, you know it’s only like 3 miles to the Port of Oakland, when else will I have this opportunity to go there? Well, I suppose I would have had some more in the next 4 years, but it was still well worth it. I was tired as hell, and slept early after some dinner this night to get ready for Army the next day.
