UC Berkeley 33 – Berkeley, California – 2002

Went to Art 1A at 9:30, told the teacher, yo, I gotta leave, yo, cuz of this army things is more important, yo.  Well, it didn’t QUITE go like that, but I looked at some examples he had, and got them squared away.  Arrived at the Army.  Instead of writing everything that went on, I should write what I did.  I talked to SSG Montgomery, the Retention NCO at the 368 Military Intelligence Unit, and made sure that my bonus of 3000 dollars will not be taken away.  I also asked him about information about MGIBill and the Loan system.  Filled out a form for RSTing the drill, another form for changing units.  I will be attached to the S-3, will probably need Top Secret clearance since I will be handling confidential information working directly under Captain Taylor and Captain Powell.  Both of them are really cool, and after a while, I talked to them like they’re my buddies about football, NFL and college.  Too bad Army’s not doing too well in college football at the moment, but Captain Powell seems to have money on the Dolphines this year.  I probably have a good chance of going to AirAssault, since Captain Taylor is the officer in charge of sending people to various military schools.  I think I made a good impression on him, and I will continue to do so, and if I keep up my PT scores, I should be set to go next year.  I sat in a briefing with a First Sergeant, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Love, the two captains and the Master Sergeant regarding live pop up target rifle qualifying range organization for the May drill.  I’m excited because I get to observe first hand what goes on in the officers’ world and get involved with confidential information.  Captain Taylor took me outside and told me I’ll probably need a Top Secret clearance or something close to that to work under the S-3 HHSC.  But right now, I’m excited about the opportunities at hand, and I’ll do my best to well, do my best there.  I had a good time getting to know people, and I realized how much I missed the Army when I went this weekend.  I loved not having to worry about race, gender, religion, height, weight, intelligence, class, whatever, and just eating lunch together, playing 2 ball soccer and volleyball and just getting along.  It was a good experience, and I know I will not be who I am if I did not experience what I did and continue to experience.  Looks like I can also go to Korea sometime soon (Within the next 2 years), and PLDC sergeant school won’t be a big problem for me, because of Captain Taylor, again, working for sending people to schools.  Maybe AirAssault, I’m keeping my fingers crossed.  I know AirAssault deserves more respect than Airborne, and they’re a lot more hardcore, so I want to give it a try.  I know it’ll be hard, but I want to see how much further I can push my limit, the ultimate goal being Ranger School.  Since I’m in the MI unit especially working under commanders of S-3, that would mean that in the future, I would most likely get to work in the MI corps if/when I get my commission as a 2nd Lietenant.  So lots of good news, although more paperwork and research should be done.  Made 150 bucks for going to the drills over the weekend.  Traveled at least 15 miles on both Saturday and Sunday, going to and fro.  It was hard, but I know I did not reach my limit, far from it.  That brings the tally up to 50 miles on my bike in 3 days.  On the way back home on Saturday, got my pictures from the overnight service at Walgreen’s.  On Sunday, I really wanted to go to sleep cuz I was just dead tired from the bike rides and the Army, but I just had to go to church at 6:45 PM.  And I realized that church means so much more if you go after you’re tired as hell and you know you could be sleeping but you’re there on your own accord.  Praises, sermons, prayers mean so much more, and it was definitely more important than sleep.  Came back home, slept from 9:30 PM till 9 AM the next day.
