Army Basic Training 2 – Ft. Jackson – 2001

Formation, 0430 hours. Went breakfast, then to the PX to buy a lot of equipment. Bought a lot of things today. 6 pairs of socks, detergent, shoes (running @ $60.00), some stationery, 40 stamps, 5 more pens, notepad, boot shining kit, envelopes, good insoles for shoes, dryer, 7 handkerchiefs, food powder, PT (physical training) shirt and shorts, 2 locks, some black deodorant, one large and 5 small towels, glass strap. Total: 163.50. No I did not just decide to buy all that for nothing, it was included in a list of things to buy. The shoes itself was 60 bucks. Back to barracks, cleaning up today. Took us near 2 hours, moving our beds and closets, sweeping, mopping, waxing the room and the latrine. Been doing lots of pushups, both by myself and because drill sergeants told us to. Actually beat someone in pushups contest. Drill sgt. Burr’s pretty cool though. He gets us all tensed up, but he jokes around sometimes and doesn’t push us more than we need to, actually does the pushups with us, too. Lots of relaxing time today. There are just about as many girls as guys here, but we rarely interact and we can get in real trouble if we talk. “Look but don’t touch or talk,” they tell us, and that’s what we do. We mop everyday now, it’s become a routine, we know it’s a part of our duty we have to do without being told to. Organizing stuff we bought, and most of us are writing now. Formation. Someone’s injured. It’s funny how there are more guys than girls, but more guys have crutches on than girls. We call them the crutch battalion. There’s at least 2,000 people here; it’s a mess when we go get food. Lights out, but a black guy with a deep voice is imitating Gary Coleman. “Watcha talking about!!” Still can’t believe I spent the least money at the PX in my battalion. Lights out.
