UC Berkeley 147 – Berkeley, California – 2004

Happy birthday mom!

What an interesting weekend. One of the greatest in quite some time.

Bottom of the 9th inning, down 3 – 0, Dodgers leading the Division by a single game. And that’s when we decide to score 7 runs. The Dodgers won the National West Division! Unbelievable. How can you not love this game?

The Dodgers’ home attendance of 3,488,283 this year was the third-highest in franchise history — behind the totals in 1982 and 1983 — and ninth-highest in NL history. Best wishes to the Dodgers against the best regular season team in the nation, the St. Louis Cardinals. I know we’re gonna go all the way. it’s about time, isn’t it? (1988, 2004)

Koodos to Beltre for the record number of home runs for this year (48), Alex Cora for striking out only as often as Barry Bonds (41) but with more at bats and Gagne for blowing only 2 saves.

Angels also won, but that is another story, because this year they’ll be irrelevant in comparison to the Dodgers.

The Cal football team won, again, 49 to 7. Despite some initial doubt about their capabilities due to 20 days of rest, they came out hard. And all the other teams that needed to lose lost. Talk about number 6 Ohio State losing to Northwestern, number 7 Virginia losing to its rival Virginia Tech, a revenge from last year, and number 8s and 9s playing against each other. California climbed to national rank of 7. Whens the last time that happened? Hopefully, we can beat USC this coming weekend, which I’m flying on Thursday to LA to watch.

Then on Sunday, I wasn’t doing too much. Then I got the phone call that I’d been waiting for quite some time. It didn’t last any more than a dozen minutes, but man, it was the best dozen minutes I’ve spent on the phone. I can’t seem to stop thinking about it, but I don’t want to keep writing about it. Then I went hiking up Berkeley hills. They got a beautiful view up there, and I’ll go up again when I get the chance to.

What a great day.
