The Drive 17 – Guatemala, Central America – 2007

I woke up in the middle of the night, listening to some crazy howling noises. I thought it was the snoring campers set up next to me. I stayed up for a few minutes, frightened. It turned out to be howler monkeys. They would keep it up all night, but I was too tired to listen or care after a while.

I woke up at 3:30 AM to break camp and get ready to meet Rene, the security guard, by 4:30 up front. He led us to Temple IV for 50 Quetzales ($6). It was a bit hazy, so we never saw the sun rise, but it was interesting to see the perplexion of the temples change as the day became brighter. Including last night, I climbed up Temple II, Temple IV and Mundo Perdido twice and Temple V once. Temple V was the most interesting, given its steep climb. But I liked the view from Temple II the best, directly overlooking Temple I.

We left around noon, and arrive here at Rio Dulce. Perhaps if this place was a bit less touristy it could have been a real nice stay. But at this place called Bruno’s (make a U right after the bridge crossing going north), there’s way too many tourists here. And some people like taxi drivers and such can smell it. I got called upon like 3 or 4 times, with people screaming ‘amigo!’ so as to take a minute of my time to tell me of the services they can offer. A guy on the bike, probably working on comission, led us to Bruno’s. It cost us 300 Quetzales, but it was not worth all that money.
