So when I moved in earlier last month (wow, it’s already been 2 months), I didn’t exactly know how this new house share would turn out. 2 middle aged women and 1 middle aged nephew of the landlord who lives upstairs occupied the other 3 rooms.

Every Sunday, that nephew listens to really loud Mexican music and leaves his doors open. Today was no exception. In prior weeks, I was either not home for random reasons, or just handled the beating for an hour or two as I labored through my other items of the day, mostly out of respect for my new housemates. But today, being that I was home when it happened again, being that I was just tired from the midnight run last night, and being that I really wanted to get some studying done, I figured it’s enough.

So I cracked my door open and pumped out Avenged Sevenfold’s heavy metal rock music with my THX-Certified subwoofers. As I slowly turned the knobs clockwise, I began to realize that they had been waiting for this very moment for a very long time. With every thump of the drums I felt my heart tremble as the entire house succumbed to the sheer might of unforgiving energy seldom used. The cracking windows cried out for mercy as the drowned out Mexican music begged for forgiveness. Even I sat there amazed as I unleashed the fury of my speakers; I don’t think I’ve ever pushed it that hard before.

As the first song ended, the calamity of the day settled. The birds sang and the grass glistened. The earth rotated again and the sun resumed its course across the sky. But most importantly, the loud Mexican music was no more. Relieved, I shut down my speakers, never to be used at such magnitude again…

Just because I don’t pump up my music like you do doesn’t mean I can’t. That’s one battle you won’t win, and I’m sure you learned your lesson today.
