I knew from talking to Bethany Darnley that Emmanuel Davis was a religious guy.  Today, I was able to call him out.  At first he was saying, “I know you heard what Jermaine said, but you’re always talking to me.”  I told him I talk to him about him, not about Emmanuel.  In the same way,  I don’t talk to Emmanuel about Emmanuel, not Jermaine.  I said, you said, “God da_n.” (I spelled out the word da_n to him).  And he said, I would never say that, that would be using the Lord’s name in vain.  So I replied, are you a religious man?  Yes I am, he responded.  So I told him that I don’t care so much about whether he succeeds in math or in life or not.  That’s nothing compared to how he lives out as a Christian.  I asked him about people that do injustice to the name of Christ, if he knows of people that give Christianity a bad name.  He said he does.  He seemed to take it all in very seriously.  This from the same kid who, upon seeing Miracle go up to the board, said, “you got no cake.”

After lunch, he started to say, “These nuts.”  And when he knew that I heard it, he asked, condescendingly or smugly I’m not sure, “Can I say that?  These nuts.”

Sometimes, all of us are just like that kid.
