UC Berkeley 84 – Berkeley, California – 2002

Today was a big day, since I was working as a pollworker in the Unit 1 precinct here in Berkeley.  I knew it was gonna be fun cuz the voting process was electronic now, and because I just wanted to meet different faces of Berkeley living in unit 1 as freshmen.  I got there a bit late cuz I slept late, but it was still pretty good.  It was pretty slow in the morning, but as college students started to wake up, it was fun afterwards.  A lot of trouble regarding names being spelled wrong, a lot of people having to fill out provisional votes and such, a lot of people having filled out forms not getting notified, and a lot of people waiting in line for at least 30 minutes to vote.  It was fun working behind the desk, to experience something like that again, I had kind of missed it, it was kind of fun just looking up people’s names and knowing what I was talking about since I had some kind of experience behind me this time around.  I took an hour break when Tiffany came by to relieve my boredom, thanks a lot for cheering me up during the grumpy morning!  Then went over to Caculus class at 5, found out I didn’t ace my last test, but instead I got a 98, so that was really really cool, getting an A in that class now, then went over to my own precinct in St. John’s to cast my vote.  Had to wait at least an hour to vote.  And it was dark, too, so that wasn’t too great.  I didn’t have such a great experience with the people that I was working for.  The two black ladies were uneducated, and I could definitely tell.  I just didn’t like them all too much, although I didn’t hate them either.  The lady working as the inspector was trying to do her best, but she was inexperienced and didn’t really know what she was doing.  The black ladies had a half assed way of doing things, taking breaks every 30 minutes, doing their own thing, trying to seduce random black males that walked in to vote and such, and in the end, did nothing but complain about how things should be done, then contradict themselves and say how there’s too many bosses around there.  To each other, they made perfect sense, but I’m glad they didn’t make too much sense to me cuz I know I know better than that.  Afterwards, I thought to myself, why not just go on over to small group?  Might as well.  So I carried my bike over and enjoyed the small group.  So far I haven’t missed a single one, and I’m very glad that I’ve been given the opportunity to interact with such talented college students that can do nothing but help me grow emotionally as well as spiritually.
